Adenium arabicum 'Baobab' , also known as desert rose 'Baobab', is a particularly impressive variety of Adenium arabicum, renowned for its thick, swollen trunk reminiscent of African baobabs. This succulent plant is highly prized for its distinctive silhouette and beautiful flowers, making it a popular choice for succulent collectors and bonsai enthusiasts.
Origin: Adenium arabicum is native to the semi-arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, where conditions are extremely hot and dry.
Growth: 'Baobab' develops a particularly large and robust caudex (trunk) that serves as a water reserve, allowing it to survive in arid environments. The plant can reach a moderate height, but its growth is relatively slow, making it ideal for growing in pots.
Flowers: The flowers of Adenium arabicum 'Baobab' are spectacular, often bright pink with a white or yellow center, although colors can vary. They appear in late spring or early summer and can last for several weeks.
Light: This variety requires plenty of direct sunlight to thrive and flower profusely. It is ideal for a southern exposure where it can receive at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
Watering: As a succulent, Adenium arabicum 'Baobab' requires little water. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Watering should be reduced significantly during the winter when the plant is dormant.
Substrate: A well-draining soil mix is crucial. Use a cactus substrate or create your own mix by combining all-purpose potting soil with perlite or pumice.
Toxicity: The latex and all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested and can cause skin irritation. Therefore, it is advisable to handle Adenium arabicum 'Baobab' with care, especially around children and pets.
