Begonia erythrophylla (often called the “beefsteak begonia”) is a rhizomatous, trailing to creeping species or hybrid with thick, glossy leaves that are dark green on the upper surface and red or maroon beneath. Its leaves are broadly rounded—almost kidney‑shaped—and can reach up to ~ 15 cm across. It produces delicate pale pink flowers on stalks that arise above the foliage, typically in late winter through early spring.
This begonia tends to spread via its rhizome along the soil surface or just below it, producing offshoots and making it well suited to shallow containers, hanging baskets, or terrarium settings (if humidity is sufficient). It is considered relatively tolerant among rhizomatous begonias and has earned the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Please note: We can't confirm if this is a hybrid or the species as they have not yet flowered in our care. Please buy with this knowledge.
Native to:
Though often thought of as a hybrid, Begonia erythrophylla derives from historic breeding and is not regularly documented in wild habitats. In cultivation, it behaves like other rhizomatous begonias originating from tropical forest understories, adapted to shaded, humid environments.
Water:
Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top part of the mix to dry slightly between waterings, but avoid letting the soil become bone‑dry. Overly wet soil can lead to rhizome rot. In cooler or less active periods (winter), reduce watering frequency carefully.
Light:
Bright, indirect or filtered light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, particularly midday sun, which can scorch the leaves or fade their colour. If the light is too low, growth may slow and leaves may become pale or leggy.
Humidity:
Higher humidity favours healthy growth. Aim for humidity above ~ 60 %. In drier indoor environments, increase humidity via a pebble tray, grouping with other plants, or partial enclosure (e.g. in a terrarium with ventilation). Avoid misting the foliage excessively, which can encourage fungal issues.
Temperature:
Maintain a steady range between 18 °C and 24 °C (or slightly higher). Avoid exposure to temperatures below about 15 °C. Protect the plant from cold drafts or sudden fluctuations, which stress begonias.
