Can I be a heretic in this world?

This world is fun. This world is interesting. This world would be fascinating to visit. And that also holds true with the characters. Fischer is interesting even as a semi-broken former elite businessman who threw it all away just before getting hit by a truck and thrown into the world. The humble and not-so-humble villagers he meets are perfect foils for him. They never felt like they were nothing but tropes. Yes, Roger's wife is sick and he's grumpy and unwelcoming, but there were depths to it. We learn over time who he is as a husband, father and farmer. All of the other human characters have some backstory even if we don't see it on the pages. Its still clearly reflected in their decisions and actions. And the animal friends of Fischer that slowly gain power and intelligence due to his actions are wonderful. This is a story that was carefully and lovingly crafted and is definitely one of my favorites for the year to date.

We end with a few loose ends, but that happens in a serialization, right? Lots of anime and pop-culture references for the reader to enjoy, along with some deep philosophical moments. His entire goal is to fish as much as possible in a place where everything related to the ocean is hearsay. I just keep reading. The mystery is what exactly makes this book so addictive. I've read the second and the third is waiting for me. I read on.
